Yamashita has a long history of manufacturing squid jigs. Production of squid jigs began in 1965.
Since that time over 1500 profiles and colours have been released.
In the beginning people thought squid jigs were only for commercial fisherman.
Below is a time line showing how fishing techniques and attitudes to squid fishing have changed.

-1988

CLOTH COVERED SQUID JIGS (A-1, M-1, O-1)
During this time Yamashita only released size 4.0 to 4.5. This was because nobody used squid jigs from the shore.
The common technique was to slow troll from a boat.

1990-1996

In order to encourage leisure fisherman into squid fishing, Yamashita focused its attention on
magazines, fishing reports and work shops. This promotion popularised squid fishing for the average angler.

EGI (O-2)
Yamashita modified the body size to 3.5 as shore fishing became more popular. The falling speed of the larger jigs was too fast and caused many squid jigs to get stuck on the bottom.

JOINTED EGI
This squid jig is designed to swim like a fish using a jointed body for improved action.
The jointed squid jig had a big impression on the market and helped increase squid fishing for the average angler.

1996

A new technology of Computer Assisted Design 'CAD' was introduced.
Until this point squid jigs were hand made. The quality and uniformity of hand made jigs is difficult to maintain.
Yamashita succeeded in producing a consistently high quality jig using 'CAD' technology.

1999

Squid fishing trends began to change from nylon line to braided (PE) lines.
New squid fishing techniques like jumping and hopping were adopted with the use of braided lines. The quick jerking action was born.
Yamashita called this technique 'BISHI BASHI EGING'.

2000-2006

From 2000 squid fishing moved into the 'golden age' of popularity.
2003 EGI OH Q was born as all round model.
2006 EGI OH JP was born as a high jumping model.
Deep type (fast sinking), Shallow type (slow sinking) and many new items were born at this time.

2010-

Yamashita released a new weapon. The 'Warm Jacket'.
After 6 years of research, aquarium and in the field testing Yamashita identified that 'SQUID react to temperature'.

the revolutionary new 'warm jacket' material.

Yamashita had its 75th anniversary.
The future will continue to hold new styles of squid jigs. Yamashita will continue to be an active squid fishing pioneer!
